The characters are bigger than any single actor or Director. And it's the studios job to pick the Director/Actor who will portray the character the best. So it's all still down to the studio.

Unfortunately for you and your hatred, no Marvel superhero has matched Batman's box office record of 2 films in a row passing the Billion Mark WW. And that's in 2d no less! Iron Man needed 3d ticket sales to pass the Billion mark, plus the boost from Avengers, and still had lame DVD/BLU-Ray Sales in comparison.
