Yes Superman's an Icon thanks to great films like MOS. TIH is massively famous thanks to the 80's tv series, but Marvel failed to make a character so famous a modern day hit with his own solo franchise.
IM3 failed on DVD Sales because people didn't like it.
Whilst more people bought MOS on DVD because they loved it.

Superman Cinema franchise alone is billion dollar franchise with man of steel brining in $300 million.
Batman is also a billion dollar franchise.
Not a bad franchises. They really care about those two and not so much the rest as of late, but since marvel has stepped up, they are as well.
In the end it makes more movies for us to watch.
