Turns out the best method of doing that is sword beams. Which Link has had off and on since his first game(sword slash, sword beam, same principle). Pairing him against the more hit and run style Sora has as opposed to Cloud the Brute also highlights the usefulness of a relatively grounded stance of combat.
I think this is about right, Mega level digimon are *really* strong and hard to hurt, flame's not going to be the best finisher against Wargarurumon, Tai interrupting Red's orders *would* have an effect, and, well, anti-dragon weapons.

While powerful, Mewtwo doesn't have the direct physical toughness of Wargarurumon... plus, Mewtwo have been shown at different levels in different things, the one Ash fought in the movie is higher than other portrayals.
And there was the female Mewtwo from movie 16 that could go to its mega Y form at will. The savage one Red fought in the animated special was basically the same as a wild one you encounter in the games (untrained, not at its full potential).
But yeah, Zard's feat there is a non-factor against Wargarurumon...
