Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Well in Canon one still has to find the Crystal which forms the beam and only resides in rare places and even in those places the Force is required to locate one.

Then of course one has to put the Saber together which also requires training in the Force.

So yeah they'll be very rare considering it seems there are hardly any Force Wielders around.

Kylo's flickering and not smooth saber-blade is an indicator that the saber's unstable and is going to explode in his hand at some point and he'll lose it and his hand. SW loves cutting off hands.
