James Gunn's response to complaints

Hello fellow nerds.

Sometimes people's incorrect beliefs about science gained from past works of fiction - such as that a person will explode in outer space without a spacesuit - can often make them believe the correct science within another work of fiction is inaccurate. This is just a little about the science of Guardians of the Galaxy, which has been much debated.

There are minor SPOILERS TO FOLLOW, as well as in the attached article, so be wary...

Firstly, BadAsss Digest is right in the following article, I was making first and foremost a space fantasy or space opera, a pulp film, and that fun trumps everything. That said I wanted to make sure the film was as scientifically accurate as it could be. So I consulted with a NASA scientist throughout the film. One of my questions was whether Peter Quill could survive in outer space without a spacesuit, and without the top of his head and hands covered. The answer is yes, for a short amount of time, if he had oxygen. And, without a mask, if he released all oxygen from his lungs, for a significantly shorter amount of time.

Throughout test screenings, people would be upset when Quill saves Gamora and both of them survive in space for a short amount of time without space suits or oxygen. But I had to stick to my guns in the editing of the film, as it was completely possible. In addition to the reasons the article states, there are a few more why Quill and Gamora survive -
-Gamora is genetically and cybernetically enhanced, allowing her to stay alive longer than Quill would.
-When Quill is in outer space outside both the Kyln and Knowhere, there is no anti-gravity, but there is residual atmosphere from those places. Rocket even mentions it to Quill outside Knowhere. This lessens the impact of space.
-Much of the scene is shot in slow motion, meaning it takes up more time on screen than it would in real life.
-The airlock within the Eclector (Yondu's ship) has regenerative properties, which is why both Quill and Gamora are all good when they are pulled into the ship. After all, the Ravagers are a bunch of thrill-seeking idiots. One of Kraglin's favorite pastimes is probably jumping out into outer space completely nude for a few seconds and quickly clamoring back in.

EDIT - MORE QUESTIONS ANSWERED -
How does Quill get batteries for his Walkman?
This one I don't get at all. They've mastered anti-gravity. I think they can figure out a power source for his Walkman.
How does everyone speak English?
They don't. In the mug shot sequence, you'll see that Quill has a translator in his neck.

I also have reasons for why the Milano and other vehicles are able to travel between planets at such fast speeds, but I'll probably save that for later on.

The easier answer would have been: "Quill is half alien so deal with it nerds."

IM3 pissed me off to no ends. There was too much nonsense that it got so silly. Thor 2 as well. It was annoying that they went overboard and in turn felt as forced humor. Thank goodness Captain 2 brought a good balance. GOTG humor was just fun and how the oddity of the group is any ways. Hopefully, Marvel puts out more movies with a good balance of humor like Cap 2 and not what they gave us in Thor 2 and IM3. As for Howard the Duck, I didn't mind his appearance, but I was hoping for a serious reveal that would expand into other storylines. A reveal of Nova, Mentor/Eros, the Skrulls, Annihilus, the Space Knights, or Blaastar would've been sweeeeeet!

Batman - Need to be Dark and Gritty
Superman - needs action pack, Fun, inspiring, - this is why Man of Steel failed. The leveled city and snapping of Zod's neck

It was the best part of the movie, it felt like two gods clashing in front of mere mortals.

MOS having that Darker tone will work well for Batman V Superman. Because they won't have to clash franchises with completely different tones together.

However when it comes to Justice League then they will have to mix and match and balance out the tone. That's just part of what's going to make JL difficult (on top of the lack of solo franchises), and why I think DC's biggest hit will be B v S, and not JL.

On the subject of Howard the duck....

I read that if you look behind Howard, im not sure where exactly, there is a cocoon that has been torn open. The rumor is Howard was there to throw people off. Supposedly Adam Warlock was in that cocoon.

I'll be watching it again soon; I'll take a closer look.

JL the animated series was able to combine serious tone with humor pretty well. They should use that as case study.

Pretty good movie. Not the best movie but still pretty good.

I didn't see Adam Warlock in the end credits on my second viewing. I'm sure in time people will come with stills of the scene highlighting were he is if the rumor is true.

Just got back from seeing this. Just like CA: TWS, I thought this was satisfactory, but not anything amazing.

But you loved that lackluster Lucy so it is safe to say your opinion is off.

One thing that does not add up is that in thor the dark world Odin said " malekith made a weapon out of that darkness, called the aether". ok...so he created it..fine. how he managed to create an infinity stone out of "darkness" who knows but fine.

but in guardians its clearly shown/implied that the celestials had a part in making the stones...

I never did buy that malekith was powerful enough to create something like an infinity stone, especially seeing how he got his assed whopped by frigga but maybe odin was wrong??

My initial thought on the matter was The Aether was actlly not an infinity stone. Its just really powerful and everyone was mistaken. I mean if Marvel were going to run with that then that could be a weakness that could be exploited. Maybe Thanos gets all the stone but since the Aether wasn't a true stone it will have a negative effect on him after trying to combine them into the Gauntlet...which could make him grow weaker the more he uses it.

Keep in mind that is all just something I have been thinking about lol

Great movie, I'm glad James Gunn is interested in handling the space related stuff for the MU

not sure if it was brought up in here didn't anyone notice the Loyd kaufman cameo in the prison scene

9/10
