Adapting to surroundings does not magically make someone a better fighter. Quinn had no military training, afaik! In fact, Quinn probably would've gotten his ass beat down at the local bar too, by some non trained Joe Schmoe. Van Zan beat no one relevant. If he beat down Bale in his Batman role, then we can talk. Quinn was a leader, but definitely no warrior.
In fact, Van Zan would take a few ass whippin's at the local bar himself if he kept running his mouth.
