Given how he was a main part of both the Avengers films' endings, he'd likely play a big part in the battle with Thanos as well. But I think him solo'ing is a very very unlikely scenario. What I could see happening though is Thanos being weakened by a huge team assault, and Tony maybe delivering the final blow, possibly sacrificing himself in the process. His days have to be numbered after the close calls at the end of the last two Avengers films (he almost died in New York, and was unsure whether he and Thor would survive their Sokovia plan). It would also then tie up his film contract with Marvel.
