No, a joke doesn't have to have that. Even so, it did have a connection. You didn't understand or like the connection so now you're going to try to say he wasn't joking. You don't get to do that.
He didn't misread it. He decided to use it against you, in a humorous manner. You:
A) Didn't get that he was joking.
B) Didn't get that he did not misread you.
THIS is why I said I hate it when someone cannot own up to a small error because now we have you trying to tell a dude his joke wasn't a joke because you slipped up, which is ten types of uncool.
