It's in a cutscene of sorts, and has an influential impact on the story, I don't think we can dismiss this as non-canonical.

Its optional, but it can play a pivotal role in the story other instead of just being a means of fighting enemies, it was also not present in KOTOR.

Honestly we have little reason to believe that canon Exile is Exile with all possible powers unlocked and all paths explored.

Yeah, the Canon Exile is not even present in KotOR II. I refuse to believe that Meetra Surik is the same woman.
