The same reason Microsoft don't base their notion of success and failure on only Japanese sales of the xbox.
^ They keep the most profit from domestic sales though. That said, whatever profit they keep from international markets, it's still more money for the studio.

Iirc, that person had a problem with the R rating because it was supposed to hurt ticket sales, didn't matter if an R rating would have done the character/film justice. Some people only care about box office figures, quality "who cares".
Best part, the R rating brought in both dollars and quality/justice to the character.
