Industrialist Tony Stark is a technological visionary... a famous, wealthy and unparalleled inventor. Gravely injured by an act of industrial sabotage, Stark saved his own life by designing a life-sustaining shell. With the world's most advanced and powerful suit of armor, Stark transforms into its greatest human fighting machine. He is the Golden Avenger known as Iron Man.

This is the Revamped Respect Thread for one of Marvel's most famous heroes. The man behind the armor is a futurist and a prolific self-improver. Accordingly, Stark has invented and upgraded multiple suits of armor throughout the decades. Out of convenience, I've decided to categorize his feats and fights by using his different armors (mostly by chronological order). His most iconic suits of armor were general purpose and generally saw use for dozens, if not hundreds, of issues at a time and that's where this thread begins. Different tasks demand specialization however, and Stark's also built a menagerie of special purpose armors. They will also be showcased, even though some of these armors ended up having only a single purpose. The names I've used are unofficial.

I. RESPECT

Iron Man, along with his alter ego Tony Stark, is one of the most recognized and respected super-heroes on Earth. But he has also earned the personal respect of most of his super-hero peers. After his first encounter with the X-Men, Professor X communicates, "You risked your life for one of my X-Men! No matter who you really are, I shall repay you some day! I promise you that!" Tony Stark has always played an instrumental role in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s organization. Accordingly, Nick Fury has bluntly stated, "Me, I figure if Stark's a traitor, so was Patrick Henry!" From Iron Man #10:

Iron Man has earned respect internationally as well. The arrogant Sunfire admits, "I cannot help but owe you a debt I can never repay! Farewell -- you have earned my respect, Iron Man!" From Iron Man #70:

Iron Man's reputation as a hero extends beyond the planet as well when he first thwarted Thanos' machinations. Drax the Destroyer states, "[I]n any case, I owe you my life, Earthman! How can I-- and the Titans -- ever repay you?" From Iron Man #55:

It may not be readily apparent, but Iron Man has even inspired several super-heroes directly. Hawkeye recounts, "Seeing [Iron Man] go into action, I just knew that's what I wanted to do with myself. II. MARK ZERO ARMOR

The original Iron Man armor. Built in a cave with Dr. Ho Yinsen's assistance.

The original Mark Zero armor represents many things for Tony Stark. His genius, for being able to create a working mobile weapons system and defensive exoskeleton. His resourcefulness, for being able to create it with nothing but spare scraps. His hubris, for having to build it after being wounded by his own munitions that his wealth was based on. And, ultimately, his destiny as a hero.

STRENGTH

The Mark Zero armor was no slouch in the strength department. The Mark Zero armor is capable of lifting a giant lizard monster back out over the oceans in Iron Man #193:

DURABILITY

While the Mark Zero armor looks rather clunky and rickety, it's ability to withstand blunt force was enough to keep its pilot alive despite an Ultimo smashing it into the ground head-first repeatedly. From Iron Man #300:

The Mark Zero armor was built with the idea of fighting off a camp of militants in mind. So obviously, the Mark Zero armor was completely bullet-proof to piercing damage. From Tales of Suspense #40, Iron Man #197 and Iron Man vol.4 #5:

SPEED

The Mark Zero armor's flight speed is fast enough to catch a helicopter but no one that is outfitted with a rocket booster, much to Stark's chagrin in Iron Man #197:

BLASTING POWER

As a prototype, the Mark Zero armor's offensive capabilities were not nearly as great as future models. Here, Stark notes that the Mark Zero armor's repulsor rays operate at only half the blasting power of future versions of the armor in Iron Man #192:

REPULSOR RAYS

The original Mark Zero armor was outfitted with rudimentary repulsor rays capable of blowing through soldiers. As shown in this flashback in Iron Man vol.4 #5 and in Invincible Iron Man #18:

OTHER WEAPON SYSTEMS

The Mark Zero armor was also equipped with a streaming flamethrower in its glove units. From Iron Man vol.4 #5:

Even though Stark was working with scraps, he was working with scraps of his own munitions. Because of that, he was able to equip the Mark Zero armor with cluster bomblets. From Iron Man vol.4 #5:

ORIGIN

The origin of the Mark Zero armor has been told and retold numerous times and has changed very little. Taken hostage when he was gravely injured by his own landmines, a piece of shrapnel was nearing his heart with every passing heartbeat. Forced to repurpose Stark weapons for his captors, he instead developed a chestplate which would magnetically keep the shrapnel at bay with fellow captive Dr. Ho Yinsen. He also designed the Mark Zero armor to destroy the hostage camp and, despite Yinsen's tragic death, escaped his captors. As retold in this flashback in Iron Man vol.4 #5:

UPGRADES

As recollected here, after Stark made it back to the States, he "improved it some -- onboard O.S., lenses, heating and cooling systems, rudimentary repulsor weapons..." From Invincible Iron Man #18:

III. MARK I ARMOR

Iron Man's first refined armor and the reason behind his namesake, the "Golden Avenger."

Only one issue after his original appearance in Tales of Suspense #39, and now having all of his resources at his disposal, Stark decided to make improvements to his original armor. And they weren't just cosmetic.

STRENGTH

While the Mark I armor was far from the most sophisticated of his suits. It was "by far, the strongest" among the early suits of his career. From Iron Man and the Armor Wars #2:

Similarly, while the Mark I was never supposed to be one of his more advanced armors, it was still plenty durable. The Mark Zero and I armors saw only several issues of use. Eventually, Iron Man would create a completely new suit of red-and-gold armor. He would stick with this new design through several direct upgrades and many years. Much more advanced and boasting sophisticated arsenals, the Classic armor would make Iron Man one of the most powerful fighting machines in comics.

Another trait that one would not typically associate with Iron Man is his energy absorption abilities. As will be shown, Iron Man is one of the more competent and most consistent energy absorbers in comics.

First off, the Classic armor was the first model to install devices called thermocouples. These thermocouples could draw full electrical charges from surrounding fire, from Iron Man #3, 24, 46 and 66:

One of the more ingenious traits of the Classic armor was its newly improved collapsible folding nature. One of the reasons he could absorb energy so efficiently was due to several component devices: the quick charger element, the universal recharger wire, and detachable power pods attached to his hips. ORIGIN

The biggest problem with the Mark I armor was its cumbersome weight and the need to recharge energy wasted on operating its weight. Stark decided to design an armor with new materials that was "far lighter... but just as strong!" "In some ways, it's more powerful, for, due to its lighter weight, I'll be able to carry still more protective devices!" From Tales of Suspense #48:

UPGRADES

The Classic armor would go through the most upgrades of any of his models. These upgrades were not merely cosmetic, or the byproduct of attaching a new device, but a result of concerted efforts to increase the armor's operational efficiency and power. His first substantial upgrade was to his chestplate by "modifying a master transistor, and tripling its power output!" From Tales of Suspense #63:

In Iron Man #3, Stark reveals that "[f]or months I'd been considering revisions to my armor . . . my transistors have become outmoded as a source for powering my armor! By replacing them with microscopic integrated circuits, I increase my chestplate's effectiveness..." This makes the armor much lighter and more power efficient. Furthermore, by using a cobalt bombarder, he creates a molecular reaction within the armor to create a "permanent thermocouple . . . able to draw electrical current from intense heat or cold..." Later, in Iron Man #6, he tests it and confirms "it's able to stand far more punishment than any of its predecessors!"

Yet again, working behind the scenes, Stark reveals, "It looks like now is the time to implement my planned alterations into a new suit of armor." This time, he creates a suit that extends out completely from his polarized chestplate so that he could wear it all the time underneath his clothes and never be caught without it. This versatility did have a cost; while "it still contains all the weapons and devices of its predecessors . . . the armor itself is slightly more vulnerable." From Iron Man #85:

Eventually, the lifesaving chestplate designed to keep the shrapnel near his heart at bay was rendered obsolete due to a synthetic heart transplant. So the last upgrade he made was rolled back raising his armor's durability back to peak condition; as confirmed by a battery of tests. "If my redesigned armor can take punishment like that, two-bit villains like Kraken will never give me trouble again!" From Iron Man #95:

Eventually, the synthetic heart would give out and he was forced to remove his thermocouple and solar collectors to make room for "thousands of life-preserving micro-circuits and electronic storage cells!" However, "the new circuits are smaller -- leaving me room to add some innovations to the armor's defenses!" From Iron Man #98:
