X. SKIN ARMOR

After Stark was forced to destroy the Heroes Reborn armor that had gained sentience, he experimented with a new prototype: the SKIN armor.

It lasted for only a handful of issues and, for the most part, was incomplete half of the time. Still, it was one of the physically toughest armors he has ever constructed.

STRENGTH

The SKIN armor was one of strongest Iron Man armors ever constructed. Here, he is surrounded by pure omnium steel bears and he shatters them with a single strike in Iron Man vol.3 #42:

DURABILITY

The namesake for the SKIN armor was the SKIN technology made by Askew laboratories. The liquid metal SKIN forms a "nearly adamantium-hard shell" that makes it nearly impervious to both blunt force and piercing damage. From Iron Man Annual 2001:

ORIGIN

The SKIN armor was an experimental prototype that was put into field use out of necessity when the Heroes Return armor developed sentience and rebelled. A company called Askew developed "[l]iquid metal circuitry that shapes the object it's forming around... into a nearly adamantium-hard shell." He eventually worked out all the kinks and it becomes fully operational until he confronts Ultron. He would be forced to abandon it when Ultron compromises the artificial intelligence and heart-circuitry in his repulsor node. From Iron Man vol.3 #42 and 44:

XI. PENTAGON ARMOR

After abandoning the SKIN armor paradigm, Stark designed a new armor.

Not an official name by any means, the Pentagon armor was what Iron Man wore when he began taking a much more vested interest in international relations, military intelligence and internal government corruption. He began working with and against Pentagon interests, culminating in his appointment as Secretary of Defense.

The Extremis armor itself was an incomplete experimental unit. Stark explains:

"[E]xperimental unit. I've been trying to get the Iron Man back to a collapsible model for years. But the more I added into it... it overcomplicated, you know? This version is all made out of memory metals. An electric charge makes it snap into shape, and the molecular structure collimates into super-hard planes. Most of the interior elements compress to about 90% of their working volume. It's tougher, faster and lighter than the current unit. But I couldn't miniaturize the control systems. I still needed the undersheath, the hard upper torso, and the helmet systems. We can reconfigure Extremis to do all those jobs."

XIII. HYPERVELOCITY ARMOR

At some point before attaining Extremis, Stark built a prototype suit called the Hypervelocity armor.

The Hypervelocity armor had several defining characteristics. First, it had the ability to upload Stark's consciousness into a digitized form should he be incapacitated. Second, the armor's processors benefited from a radical increase in computing power compared to armors prior to Extremis. Third, it possessed pure speed and maneuverability befitting its namesake.

STRENGTH

ORIGIN

In the middle of testing his new Hypervelocity armor, Tony Stark was attacked and grievously injured. The Hypervelocity armor uploaded Tony Stark's consciousness to operate the armor. After seeing Stark to safety, the Hypervelocity armor began investigating who its attackers were, but not before the armor was flagged down and hunted by S.H.I.E.L.D., who had mistaken it for a rogue armor. In addition to all this, an advanced computer virus was attacking Tony 2.0's consciousness.

After wild chases and firefights, the Hypervelocity armor eventually evolved its processing speed well past the human cognitive clockspeed barrier to achieve super sentience, just in time for it to spend fractions of a second -- a lifetime to it -- to disrupt a nuclear warhead's critical mass and save the S.H.I.E.L.D.
