XIV. BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR

After being hacked by the Skrulls in Secret Invasion, Stark found that the Extremis in his system was completely compromised and, therefore, unusable.

However, he still had an enhanced biotechnological physiology. And when he was finally able to start picking up the pieces of his life, he decided to create a new suit: the Bleeding Edge armor. A liquid metal nano-tech suit which was a quantum leap ahead in sophistication over his previous armors.

STRENGTH

What makes it more impressive is that the Destroyer armor was amping itself by stealing power from various god pantheons around the world. Stark and Reed discuss the after-effects of the Extremis in his body being shut down. After describing how much power is being used to power his brain, he tells Reed he isn't just upgrading, he's elevating the evolution of the Iron Man armor completely. Later, he explains it to Sasha Hammer:

"Well, I met a kid once. He literally came from the future. Wore a suit a lot like mine. But it responded to his thoughts. It was a kind of liquid and it could change shape. Not add mass, per se, but redistribute its mass as he saw it. And I thought -- wouldn't it be amazing, to have a suit like that. For the Iron Man and the pilot to truly be one. For the Iron Man to be able to intuit what the pilot wanted. For the pilot to have self-instinctual control...

ORIGIN

After being forced to expel the Bleeding Edge armor from his system, the DNA-modifying techno-virus Extremis found its way onto the black market. Its creator, Maya Hansen, was murdered by those who wish to profit from it. Tony Stark vowed to hunt down all existing versions to prevent the technology from being twisted and used as a weapon with dangerous consequences. To do this, he developed a new Modular armor to help him adapt to the different threats. From Iron Man vol.5 #1-3:

Beyond the general purpose armors, Stark designed several specialty armors.

While most of Stark's general purpose armors were capable of limited space-flight, he built a series of suits that were designed specifically for the rigors of outer space. Indeed, he currently uses the latest version of the Space armor in his current ongoing.

XVII. STEALTH ARMORS

The next specialty armor that Tony Stark designed for specialized missions was the Stealth armor.

One of the more visually memorable armors, it was meant to be invisible and excelled in covert operations. At first, extra armaments and physicality compromised the stealth modes. But Stark continued to refine the cloaking systems and with each model, he honed the combat capabilities and powers available to him.

STRENGTH

The second Stealth armor was physically not a match for the Titanium Man, but it could hold its ground long enough to lift and chuck boulders to buy him time. From Iron Man #229:

ORIGIN

There have been at least five different models of the Stealth armor. The first Stealth armor model was, as usual, an experimental unit. "I realized a need for specialized armor to be used in clandestine situations after radar tracked me to the Starwell space station." As a prototype, he wasn't able to incorporate any weapons systems into it. From Iron Man #152:

The next model was "a lot slimmer than [his] regular armor, to make it more maneuverable -- which means [he] had to pare down the weapons systems." At the same time, at least it did have some weapons systems, unlike the first version. From Iron Man #229:

There have been at least three different Deep Sea armors. The first one was, unsurprisingly, an experimental prototype. "My regular Iron Man suit can go underwater -- but not for miles. One of the more specialized armors he's constructed was the Tunneling armor.

The Tunneling armors were bulky suits built for subterranean operations. They were strong, durable and built like tanks.

XXII. SINGLE PURPOSE ARMORS

Over the course of Stark's life, he has created many, many armors. Those include general purpose armors, specialty armors and other armors for single purpose use. These single purpose suits were either used by Stark only once or were used by other pilots.

GUARDSMAN ARMOR

The Guardsman armor was the first single purpose armor he created that was a drastic departure from the Iron Man paradigm.

Developed together with his ally, Kevin O'Brien, it was originally intended to be a backup to the Iron Man armor -- a fail-safe measure that he hoped would never need to be used. Stark never ended up donning the suit himself. When Stark was captured by villains, Kevin O'Brien put on the suit to save him.

However, a malfunction in the armor warped Kevin's personality and turned him from an ally of Stark's into an enemy. Kevin was killed in battle and his brother, Michael, sought the armor out for revenge. Stark and Michael eventually settled their differences and after repairing the malfunctioning units, he inherited the Guardsman armor with Tony's blessing. From Iron Man #43-44:

The War Machine armor is the most enduring single purpose armor that Tony Stark invented.

When Tony's nervous system deteriorated almost past the point of no return, he designed his variable threat assessment armor, the War Machine suit. He wore the suit only once before going on to fake his own death. On his seeming deathbed, he bestowed the armor to his best friend, James Rhodes. Rhodes, who was reluctant to pilot another Iron Man armor after numerous close calls, respected Tony's wishes nonetheless. From Iron Man #281 and 283-84:

After the surgery to Tony's nervous system was completed, he was still convalescing and remained bedridden.

During this time, Stark debuted the Neuromimetic Telepresence Unit 150 suit. The armor was operated completely by cybernetic remote control, "Though similar in design to [the Neo-Classic] armor and its remote-controlled counterpart, the NTU-150 incorporates the new SE Telepresence technology, enabling the unit to be operated under full Virtual Control. . . . In contrast to traditional robotic devices, the NTU-150 contains no mechanical framework to mimic the action of the human body. The unit's outer shell is articulated by a multiprocessor-controlled structural integrity field, which allows for a much greater range of movement than would be ordinarily [] feasible.

More importantly, it provides far greater internal space, allowing for an exhaustive range of weapons and defensive systems, data collection/analysis hardware and utility devices of various types." THORBUSTER ARMOR

One of the most powerful single-purpose armors Stark has ever created, designed to fight one of his oldest allies: Thor.

In the Standoff storyline, Thor inherited the Odinforce and the throne of Asgard. He also took a greater personal interest in world affairs and the welfare of his personal worshipers. Having invaded sovereign nations to wage war, Captain America and Iron Man were brought in to halt escalating tensions. Iron Man came prepared with the Thorbuster armor.

Essentially a walking power reactor with a jewel fragment of Asgardian magic at its core, the Thorbuster armor actually absorbed and rechannelled the Odinpower that King Thor wielded and engaged him in a spectacular fight. ABLATIVE ARMOR

When Stark encountered an alien nanoplasm capable of co-opting any materials, including his armor, he had to resort to using a special suit.

"It's a prototype -- the Ablative Armor Mark I. Ablative, meaning that it's meant to be degraded as it gets hit. See those tiles honeycombing the surface? They're layered on... Each tile's made of a high-impact polymer. When one gets damaged, it pops off, and the next one below it snaps into place. . . .

That structure on the back's a polymer kiln -- it cooks up new tiles, as needed. The suit's force field system then grabs the new tiles and shoots them back into place. It's less robust than the standard model, but if I get hit with more armor-absorbing goo, I can just eject the bad tiles and keep on going." From Iron Man vol.3 #71-72:

GAMMA-PROOF ARMOR

The U.S. government became concerned with dirty bomb terrorism and tasked Stark with developing a radiation-proof suit that would allow a layman to operate within the contaminated area.

A chance meeting with Bruce Banner took his experiment for a Gamma-Proof armor into a radical direction, "The elements needed to shield the gamma make constructing a flexible, working suit nearly impossible. But we may have an ally in the RG-27 compound... RG-27 not only shields the body from the gamma, but actually breaks down the photons, eventually nullifying the radioactive poisoning. The sticker is that RG-27 is most potent in gas or liquid form. . . .

Hmmm... line the suit with a network of minute irrigation tubes... flowing with RG-27. . . . behind the reservoir system is a second lining -- very thin -- of magnesium oxide. It acts like a magnet to the gamma photons, drawing them into the suit."

The Gamma-Proof armor worked to specs, however, Stark exceeded his test protocols and ended up being gamma poisoned. This inevitably led to him engaging the Savage Hulk in a fight with it. From Incredible Hulk vol.2 #72 and 74:

IRON SPIDER ARMOR

In the lead-up to Civil War, Stark enlisted Peter Parker's help. One result of that partnership was the Iron Spider armor.

"I've incorporated mesh webbing that can allow you to glide for short distances. Heat-resistant kevlar micro-fiber that can resist small-caliber bullets. Built-in fire, police and emergency scanner. Audio and visual amplification, including infrared and ultra-violet... carbon filters in the mouth area to keep out toxins, ad a short-range gps microwave communication system, all routed through a computerized control system in the titanium chestpiece. . . .

The suit can also blend into a variety of backgrounds. . . . The waldoes can pick things up safely and look around corners. . . . they also have limited fighting capabilities..." What Spider-Man didn't know is that Tony was using the suit's telemetry data to develop counter-measures against Spider-Man himself. Eventually, Peter would abandon its use but the Iron Spider costume would be used by M.V.P.'s clones in the Initiative. EXCALIBUR ARMOR

In the finale to the Iron Man/Dr. Doom trilogy, Iron Man: Legacy of Doom, appeared one of the more powerful Iron Man armors to date: the Excalibur armor.

When an ancient extra-dimensional evil invades Earth, the legendary weapon Excalibur is the key to victory. Possession of the sword makes you invincible; possession of the scabbard makes you invulnerable. Iron Man's Neo-Classic armor merged with the scabbard becoming a construct of pure magical power. Together with Doom, made invincible by wielding the blade, they fought the demon.

But to no avail. They had to complete the full merger and when the blade itself was plunged into the heart of the Excalibur armor, the magicks that poured forth destroyed the evil. In the aftermath, Merlin took custody of Excalibur. From Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3-4:

IRON PATRIOT ARMOR

After the events of Secret Invasion, Stark was forced to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. and forfeit all technology to the control of Norman Osborn, Director of H.A.M.M.E.R.

Despite Stark's efforts to lock down all of his own Iron Man armors, Norman Osborn managed to bypass his security measures with the assistance of Ghost. Using his own genius, he managed to repurpose one of them into the Iron Patriot armor. Nevertheless, "Well, there [were] certain components to the puzzle we're just flat-out missing. The repulsor tech generator that powers the thing. First and foremost. We can replicate a lot of things but Tony Stark's genius isn't one of them." From Dark Avengers #1 and Invincible Iron Man #13:

Eventually, Osborn's tenure as head of H.A.M.M.E.R. ended after a mental breakdown caused by Loki. During Siege, Osborn led a disastrous assault on Asgard that ended up reuniting the Avengers and led to his incarceration and forfeiture of his Iron Patriot armor. From Dark Avengers #16:

At some point, a massive drone army of Iron Patriots went rogue under A.I.M.'s control. Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes was called in by S.H.I.E.L.D. to handle the problem. Rather than fight them, he appealed to their soldier programming as a former Marine. And now, the Iron Patriot is on the side of the good guys. From Secret Avengers vol.2 #6:

RESCUE ARMOR

Pepper Potts was fatally injured by a repulsor detonation at Ezekiel Stane's doing. Her body riddled by shrapnel and too weak to undergo surgery, Stark had to resort to drastic measures.

And thus, the Rescue armor was born. "To enhance her recovery, we put a Stark-Rand electromagnetic repulsor generator inside of her. After it regulated and accelerated her healing process. I gave her the option of keeping it. It made her more human than human. It powered her suit and it made her a super hero. . . .

Pepper's suit, though... it's an extraordinary search and rescue enhancile. Much more paramedic in nature. No explicit weaponry." From Invincible Iron Man #4 and 10-11:

Pepper used the Rescue armor throughout Dark Reign. Eventually, in order to bring Stark out of his brain-death, Pepper's Stark-Rand node was needed. But enamored with her time as a super hero, she forced Stark to build her the Rescue Mark II. The Mandarin eventually corrupted the Rescue Mark II's built-in A.I. system and she was forced to destroy the armor forever. From Invincible Iron Man #21, 29, 524 and 526-27:

IRON DESTROYER ARMOR

A time of uncertainty and fear grips the world. During the events of Fear Itself, Odin's elder brother, Cul, summoned the Worthy by summoning mystic hammers from the heavens and transforming its destined wielders into unstoppable engines of destruction to rampage in the Serpent's name. As the Avengers rallied to humanity's defense, Stark understood that they were completely outmatched. At the foot of Odin's realm of Asgard, Tony petitioned the god to let him build weapons worthy of this war -- drinking an entire bottle of wine and sacrificing his years of sobriety and discipline to the god.

One of those weapons was the Iron Destroyer armor, his own Bleeding Edge armor encased in mystic uru and enchanted with the power of Odin. An armor powerful enough to take the fight back to the gods of fear. When Odin sealed Asgard-space off, the enchantment powering the Iron Destroyer left as well. From Fear Itself #6-7 and Invincible Iron Man #509-10:

BLACK ARMOR

As part of an elaborate plan to destroy Tony Stark, Hammer Industries took control of his Iron Man capabilities after convincing the government he was unfit to pilot the armor.

In response, Stark purged the armor from his body and put in motion his own counter-offensive. James Rhodes, whose death was previously faked, emerged as a new Iron Man in a newly-designed suit of Black armor and has been meeting Stark's enemies head-on. "Your suit. I know there's bits of Stark tech. Resilient tech. Think there's some A.I.M. and S.H.I.E.L.D. stuff in there..." From Invincible Iron Man #515, 517, 522 and 527:

PHOENIX-KILLER ARMOR

Stark has piloted armors to take on men, demons and gods, and even cosmic forces of destruction.

In Avengers Vs. X-Men, the Avengers are warned of the impending arrival of the Phoenix Force to Earth. Three Avengers teams are formed to tackle three specific tasks: (i) retrieve and relocate Hope from Utopia; (ii) intercept the Phoenix Force in space; and (iii) conceive and execute a plan to destroy the cosmic firebird forever. Stark led the third team.

"At the beginning of space-time, cosmic death and rebirth were only microseconds apart. Clearly, the bird was born in that moment. I've talked to Beast, T'Challa and even Hank -- they all agree... If I'm going to build a Phoenix-killer, I've got to figure out a way to crack universal expansion."

Unfortunately for Stark, while the Phoenix-Killer armor did catastrophically disrupt the firebird, it ended up splintering it into five pieces that bonded with five X-Men. From Avengers Vs. X-Men #4-5:

REBELLION ARMOR

Knee-deep in the events of Long Way Down, Stark discovered that Mandarin has been inside his head -- able to push Stark in directions he chose.

Under the villain's manipulations, Stark has been working tirelessly side by side with his ex-rival Ezekiel Stane to produce Titanomechs -- machines that will house ancient entities trapped in Mandarin's rings and could lead to the extinction of all life on Earth. Using whatever tools he could spare while persuading various Iron Man adversaries to betray Mandarin, Tony secretly built himself a new suit of armor: the Rebellion armor.

"Being removed from a high-end lab like the ones we have at Resilient meant crafting weapons lacking a certain polish. Still there's a certain something about building death-weapons in a cave -- how does the saying go? 'Polish comes from the cities: wisdom from the desert'?" From Invincible Iron Man #523-25:

THE IRON ARMOR

During Rings of the Mandarin, the Dark Elf, Malekith, managed to steal four rings for his own.

With the help of magic/tech expert Dark Angel, Tony traveled to Svartalfheim to retrieve the rings. Outnumbered and outgunned, Tony barely escaped alive. After distributing all but one of his rings to his three best generals, Malekith pursued him. Tony might be out-elved, but he retrieved one of the rings. And now that Dark Angel sent him a special suit made of actual iron (a metal that burns elves), Malekith better watch his back!
