This means he admits he had Superman do something really crazy.
Then he said ...but I think SUPERMAN was able to keep the mechanism from releasing the black hole completely.
"I think" implies he doesn't really know and is just guessing. Anyway, the word "mechanism" could very well mean "outward force" in this context. In other words, "Superman kept the mechanism from releasing the black hole completely" can possibly mean "Superman kept the outward force from releasing the black hole completely".
But here's the nail in the coffin:
He then said,
"When he threw it into the wormhole it released."
This implies that Superman, at first, was the only source preventing the black hole from releasing. Superman's stamina and durability was taking a toll due to the insane pressure and thus he needed to later create static electricity and get help from GL to maintain.
