It was neither as bad as the backlash nor should it have been as polarizing. The studio played the gender card to get attention, and it worked. But there are legit gender issues in the world. A Ghostbusters film was never one of them.
But it was kind of a wet fart of a movie. I didn't feel robbed of two hours, but neither did I really enjoy it.
Weirdest choice was the whole
Spoiler:
alternate universe thing. Why were the original cast all around, but not as their Ghostbuster selves? For a movie that was trying to be a direct legacy creation, that was a bizarre choice.
Aside from the controversy/gender politics surrounding the film which would probably be enough to turn me away from such a thing, I just don't care for the reboot in general. shrug From what I saw of reviews, I don't deny that it could have some enjoyable funny moments depending on the audience, but the nature of the humor just doesn't seem like it's for me.
With the flaming remarks people such as the director and I believe Melissa McCarthy said about the fans and stuff too though, I can't pay to go see the movie just on principle. Maybe if it comes on Netflix or something I'll give it a chance then, but the more I see of what goes on with some of the cast outside the film (Leslie Jones' racist posts being swept under the rug on Twitter because of the double standard for racism that exists now, etc), the more I just don't want to see some of their performances in any way.
Well I guess some people found this movie to be decent and that's cool. I'll admit that I am not one of those people and didn't like the movie at all be to each their own.
Granted considering the horrible marketing for it, the lack of revenue from China, the controversy of an all female cast(which ultimately is used as a gimmick), and the timing that the film was in theaters, this movie didn't stand much of a chance anyway.

This exactly.
I never commented on the movie's quality because I have no intention of seeing it and thus I can't comment.
It's just a cocktail of things (everything you mentioned) coming together that made sure I would never watch this on principle alone.

Yeah now I don't really care at all about what happened to her.
