You need to understand that the entire KMC was carefully studying Ares' appearances from Mighty Avengers to Siege. Some before that. What he ended up to be, was a disappointing anti-hero that died way before he proved anything. Neither Wolverine nor Thor, despite what Stark promised us.
I was one of them. I loved the Ares mini, and when he joined I was all pumped up.
That doesn't mean a bug like Peter takes him, though.

Arguably, yes.But then appears a question, why Gambit jobbed so bad, if Bucky did so much better, etc.
Then the same argument can be made for Spidey's opponents.
In any case, let's say they are at least comparable. I am not going to debate who is faster, but Gambit has a fair few feats of him not only dodging, but blocking bullets with his bo staff.
Ares was a good few metres away from him, and still tagged him.
You could also argue that Ares took the bullet just so he could see what Bucky could do.

Just to be clear. Which mini? The original one with him willingly getting set on fire (memorable, I admit) or the one with him training agents and riding a missile?
Sure, SM can get squashed. I'm just not sure what matters here anymore. Been offline/only-on-my-pathetic-phone too long.
Herc might have punched him dozens of times, but then, if you want to use high feats (and yes, for a d-lister like Ares, Herc fight = high feat), Parker actually hurted IG Thanus with a kick.

Gambit... stopped to be impressive long time ago.
Vs. Ares. Jumping off the rooftop with X-23. Vs. Cap. We all laughed like he was a new character introduced just "for lulz".
Meh. Usable feats? Sure, but I expected much more from a character that on average did nothing but watch Moonstone wanking Marvelboy's puny dick.

Willingly set on fire. Fighting Mikaboshi and his son who killed him with Grasscutter.
High end feats include abhi's:

If we're taking high showings for spidey might as well take high showings for Ares. And he has some weird shit with his "God" status like creating entire continents just for the heck of it.Ares would win either way.

He can fight within Planck moments. Whilst his following of X-man there in the first place is due to his personification as the War God, the fact that he could still keep up with X-man even though he was throwing punches etc 'between moments' is far faster than Spidey:And if you want to play the 'well, Spidey has tagged beings stronger than Ares', well, Ares has tagged beings FASTER than Spidey (not X-man).
But of course, that would be PIS, right?
Ares Planck feat had more or less to do with his Godly ability to not be affected by time altering and thus the feat wasn't due to his reflexes or natural ability to always see reality at those speeds.

Yes.
But then you know Wolverine matching/surpassing Spidey's speed has to do with his super-senses mixed with his skill/enhanced stats, etc.
Why you're making excuses just NOW?

X-man wasn't altering time doe (at least, not initially).
He was hiding in the Planck moments, between time. Ares followed him. They then fought. The repercussions meant that time was altered. He was able to launch attacks at someone who was moving so fast, he was between moments.

Speaking of Wolverine...
