I always thought that Masterson scene is a whole lot more than seven punches. Blitzes like that usually imply "crapload" of punches even if there are fewer sound effects. Pete is literally drawn as a small hurricane there and Thor's inner monologue implies that it's more than that.

Bear in mind, this is when Ares is NOT a god, and is on Earth ('it has been so long since I have felt any pain', implying that as a god - which is what he is in this thread fight - he feels no pain). The projectile was travelling at ridiculously slow speed compared to Hermes'. That's why catching him unawares is the only explanation possible.
