Well I would take feats and showings over contradictory statements. If Vader shows us equivalent feats of blitzing 3 Council Members, or Utterly Trouncing Darth Maul, then I will consider him being on Par with(or superior to) Sidious as a Saber duelist.
It was one thing under the Old Canon where Lucas was ignoring it all anyway. But was hoping the new Canon would be much more consistent given how they've made it a thing to have Everything they put out now be Canon.
Given all the colorful pictures and such, and the general magazine format, I doubt this is marketed towards the generation that would know Sidious more than Maul, and either more than the entire face of the Sith in the PT and TCW. Especially when Sidious shows up like once and wasn't even named until the PT. He was just the suspected rapist that obviously terrorized Vader from childhood in the OT, anyway.

It's the statement about Mace being the Council's best Warrior which I'm more concerned about. Especially when the Official Site has him as "Champion of the Jedi Order" as well.

He's annoying and literally everyone knew who he was the second we met him, giving obvious signs that he shouldn't be trusted, and in general sounding like a damsel in distress. If that's what the kids are into these days, then well, we're doomed as a species.

Dooku is certainly the least popular of the three. But I also think it’s fairly apparent that Maul is more popular than Palpatine. Regardless, the fact that this is a ranking of the top saber wielders (not villains, or dark siders, but saber wielders) would logically imply it’s a listing of the best duelists. For example, if you were to do a top ten musicians list you wouldn’t list the ten most popular musicians or the ten most “bad ass” ones, rather you would list the ten musicians you thought were the best.

Surprisingly a lot of people didn't.
I kept trying to explain it to people at the time, and believe it or not, they still didn't get it.
It was obvious to hardcore SW fans. But not to everyone, which I think was a mistake. I think they should have shown it, instead of strongly hinting at it.

I disagree. I think Top 5's are just subjective lists for fun.
And the fact that it's "top saber wielders" could just refer to those most known for that in Canon. In which case the most subjective thing on that list would be Sidious being above Maul.
