At first sight, I believed that the expanding destructive wave mechanics was a silly plot device to keep the Earth safe and that may still be the case, but I do recall that such mechanics are not unprecedented. IRL, the expansion of the universe behaves in an identical way. The farther into space you travel, the greater the force of expansion. Where we are in the world now, the planets and galaxies are inching apart, slowly; but deep in space, beyond what we can see, we do know that expansion is so powerful that it is ripping apart planets and galaxies at an atomic level. And if anyone else noticed, the objects being destroyed by the traveling shockwave looked exactly like it was atomized.
Here is an actual computer model of the galaxy being destroyed through expansion.
Here wave an the actual scene from the show.
In both cases, these objects were destroyed by forces that became more powerful, the further away it traveled from its starting point. I'm not saying that the force of their punches are equal to universal expansion, I'm just pointing out how eerily similar they are.
