Final Fantasy VII Remake

It was a big deal I think due to timing. PS1 had been out for a few years when FF7 first came out in 97. However, the N64 had just come out in 96 and so the console wars were in full swing again by the time FF7 hit. It was a big deal because it seemed to push the PS1 to it's limits and I think it was the first FF game that was on the PS1.

It is a fun game. When it comes to turn based RPG's it is one of the best, though honestly I am not a fan of that kind of RPG. Still I enjoyed it and it's one of those RPG's that is 60+ hours and has loads of extra stuff and you got the extra bosses you can find that are much harder than the final boss.

I still like Chrono Trigger and FF3 better. U ever play Chrono Cross the sequel to Chrono Trigger?

Never played it, just seen some videos. Didn't really look like something I'd want to play.

The implied fates of the original cast is kind of depressing. Killed off screen and such.

FF7 was a lot of people's first JRPG. It had the kind of story depth and expansive world that people just weren't used to. At the time, it had FMVs that were as good as almost anything out there, and was incredibly immersive. Add to that a deceptively deep materia system that adds to the combat, and it really was a powerhouse of a game at the time.

Add to that the power of nostalgia (which isn't a bad thing), and I don't think it's any surprise how loved the game is. Hell, it's my joint top game of all time (along with modded Dragon Age Origins)

Reports are coming in that it can be completed in 33 hours.

Liking DO😮 more then I did FF7 tbh.

And that's not the modded one. Not even on PC, 360.

A 33 hour Midgar? Not bad at all.

Dragon Age? If it was any other game, I'd fight you.

Yep, Dragon Age Origins.

Almost bought the complete edition on Gog. All the dlc, no server login, for 20 bucks.

But seemed a waste of money if I have the base game sitting on a 360, so opted.to play that.

I've never understood why Final Fantasy VI and especially Chrono Trigger are still to this day thought of as great JRPGs (hell even FF IV is). The writing in Final Fantasy VI can be incredibly amateurish at times (though there are also a lot of great moments in the game) and Chrono Trigger just flat out doesn't have a great story at all. Final Fantasy VII and Xenogears are clearly the best Square JRPGs.

Xenogears was an awesome game.

VI is well-liked for the intricate job system, not so much the story.

And Final Fantasy Tactics is the best Final Fantasy JRPG. 🙂 👆

This is great.

I'm not gonna watch it, as I'd probably get all misty-eyed. I'm around the same age as him and a lot of what he says hits very close to home for me too.

Less than 21 hours as of this moment. Please, please don't be shit.

Not like VII was Dickens. 👆

VI had great characters. Edgar and Sabin, Lockes Indiana Jones like character, the knight and the wolf boy, Gogo, Ceale. Kefka was a good classic supervillian.

But the star was Terra. Her story is almost parallel to a Mutant who just wants to live a human life. Brought a tear to my eye, when she protected her kids by turning Esper right in front of them for the first time, then worried they'd see her as a monster.

That, and there were a lot of fun moments, like the Opera and such.

That game was epic for 1994. At the time, there was nothing like it.

You heard it here, everyone. You can't like the game less you're bought out so no showing getting hyped for FFVII or we'll report you being spam bots.

Spoiler:
Even if the game looks awesome which it does.

*door breaking down*

Oh **** they heard me!

I'm not so sure, people seem to really praise the story as well.

I didn't even watch the vid.

My comment is directed at the Youtuber. Seen his work, think he's a joke. I'd take Dark Side Phil more seriously then him.

Well these games aren't literature. The writing in say, Wagner's Ring cycle isn't on that level either but it doesn't matter as it's a completely different medium with different standards and different ways of communicating. Games like Final Fantasy VI and VII, in terms of their storytelling medium are kind've more like what Sergei Prokofiev had in mind when he was creating a symphonic fairy tale with Peter and the Wolf (but with a more expanded story like that of a manga). I'd argue that their high points are primarily reached through their music rather than their writing.

The problem with VI though is the writing can at times be distractingly bad.

That's not to say that I don't like the story or anything, I just find it strange that fans seem to describe it as the intelligent choice for best FF story while at the same time completely overlooking the fact that the writing of the series improves drastically afterwards.

Keep in mind I'm sure a lot of people are like me and first played these games when we were young.

But I do still enjoy them if I replay them now. Perhaps it is just nostalgia who knows.
