Casue I bought em. I have Read Em so I HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO SAY THAT THEY SUCK!

Big Reasons they SUCK!
1. No CHEWIE until the 3rd book and even then he aint hardly in it.
2. The Love Intrest for Solo is a Straight Up Leia/Rebel Type Rip Off that you Just KNOW is going to Die at the end of it.
3. That and the story was just long and drawn out as most of those EU Trilogies were back then.

THE SUCK WAS STRONG WITH THEM!

Hey, I never said it was perfect. I think I was one of the first to complain about the many OT references. But... at least TFA had great characters that can go a long way.

R1 has three problems in that sense:
1. Really lousy and boring characters
2. A predictable story that doesn't quite work
3. Like TFA (so repeating the sins of TFA, which is worse in my view) an nearly endless array of callbacks, nods and references. As if it can't stand on its own two feet... oh, wait.

I agree. Chosing that particular story is a sign of a total lack of imagination. Personally, I don't need to know HOW Han did the Kessel run in less than twelve parsec or that he won the Falcon from Lando... after all, I already know that.

Oh they cover all that in the trilogy....very very poorly mind you, but it is in there....kinda.

Best part is in the 2nd book where instead of having Han meet Chewie and showing how that friendship got started they give us a Chewie Stand In with this Big Cat Guy that becomes HAN'S BFF ...who then leaves at the end of the book because...DRAMA!!!!!!!!

That happens in the first book dumbo

the second book is where he meets Chewie while in the Imperial Navy who he saves from execution

besides we don't know much more from those that they're going to be using.
