There is a difference between someone being religious or atheist and doing something bad unrelated and being religious or atheist and doing something bad because of their religion or atheism...

But this topic would be better suited to the Religion Forum, where it has been discussed many times before anyways.

I guess Mao was socially liberal in many ways as his ideas were, for example, relatively free of gender prejudice and the like, but in any political sense both of them are strong examples of anti-liberalism; they didn't even allow free thought.

And not even any sort of political liberalism as is discussed in this thread- Mao was referring to personal laissez-faire attitudes instead of the constant revolution he wanted- so that's doubly irrelevant.

Their styles of ruling were highly conservative- what they definitely were not were traditionalists.

So if we go back to Surtur's original point, you still need to establish anything about liberals doing damage to the world, or challenge him in claiming that conservatives have.

That is because athiesm is a weak banner to rally behind and religion is a powerful tool to mislead other ppl with. Same can be said for nationalism. Let us be very clear, bad ppl do bad things not because of the presence or lack thereof of religion, but because they are bad ppl. Bad ppl that can use something that can stir passions onto the weak minded, uneducated or poorly misled..

Stalin was an authoritarian leftist although it's unclear how comparable that is to "liberal". But yes, I am going off on a tangent.

But then those people are not true liberals, at least not in the way we use the word today. You can label someone whatever you want to label them, but actions matter more. Stalin committed horrible atrocities and was an all around piece of shit.
