The borders of Germany have been open for years. Asylum laws have been in place for decades before Merkel became chancellor. So this assessment is just incorrect.
The rise of the AfD is to do with (radical) right wing sentiment that used to find a place in the CDU being disenfranchised by the policies of the CDU (hence the drop from 40 to 30%. However 30% is still the vast majority of the previous CDU voters).
