In any case, a few articles online from sites that aren't particularly high traffic doesn't make a very strong case for common usage.

Most *recent* presidents have a gradual downward slide (to some extent, Obama started high, slid fast, but then leveled out to a very steady level), but it's not a historical norm. View it as a byproduct of the growing bipartisanship, it's very hard to appeal to both parties at the moment.
