I could agree to the over hype by many members here.
He can and has been defeated in direct combat by Windu. The evidence suggests he got disarmed by Yoda, and despite beating Yoda at the end, was never shown to be his clear superior in combat, as some here try to make out.
Sure he's invincible next to the likes of Maul/Opress, but not so much against the top tiers.

agreed about Yoda, Ive always said that Yoda was presented as the superior swordsman to Sidious even if it was inconclusive on screen. Force powers is a tossup although I believe Sidious to hold advantage there.
Mace is another story and as we have gone over many times in this forum on many different threads Sidious took a dive in that fight, he had to force Anakins hand and that was the way to do it.
