Its more that without the SW IP a few things wouldn't be explained very well. Which is a ****ing stupid criticism because, y'know, the SW IP does exist? And everyone actually does know all of these things? And without the IP they probably would have written the movie differently? Its a nonsense nitpick they made up because all their other criticisms were terrible and debunked (gosh, things from ANH appear in a movie set 1 day before ANH? No waaaaay!).

I would say this movie went in the Other Direction and took to much time to EXPLAIN things that DID NOT NEED to be Explained. Like the whole row of nonsense about the Kyber Crystals and the Flaw of the Exhaust Port. The Movie didn't need ANY OF that. It just slowed things down.

Nowadays people seem to like explanations... the death of story.

Yeah it's like a lot of current Marvel films wouldn't fully make sense as stand alone films without the Marvel IP. But like you said, the IP is kind of important.

K2 was the best character in this movie by a mile and is the best droid so far..

That could just be the reactor weakness. That one good hit to any part of it would destroy the whole DS.

You've set up a straw man. The point is that the characters are not engaging to make you care about what's going on and what may happen to them. They're not complaining about "talking during fight scenes." They're complaining about bland characters. I haven't seen Rogue 1 yet, but Red Letter Media hit the nail on the head with TFA. The characters and emotion was there, but the story sucked.
