I had the same thought as well when I was reading an article about this. They tried to act like this was a big deal and needed to be done just to get a comic book movie getting a Best Picture.

The subtext is: there be a lady starring in this. So it's a victory not for comic books, but for females. I wouldn't mind it so much if they didn't present it in a way that comes off as...if this fails the only reason is sexism.

Also Ares could have potentially looked much more bad ass:

Not too shabby. Still thought the Ares we got looked cool though armor-wise. Definitely not as bad a change as Doomsday's concept art for BvS when compared to the abomination that was his final design in the film, though even if they hadn't ****ed up his appearance as much as they did, there still would've been the issue of how they messed up DD's origin, etc. Ares was portrayed perfectly in comparison. I'd might put him above Zod too.

Eh, not so irrelevant. Since they can put "Oscar winning movie" on the cover of the DVD. They do not even need to specify which Oscar they won.

The reason they didnt make him look like this, is because he would look to much like Darkseid, which would be dumb.
