I had the same thought as well when I was reading an article about this. They tried to act like this was a big deal and needed to be done just to get a comic book movie getting a Best Picture.
The subtext is: there be a lady starring in this. So it's a victory not for comic books, but for females. I wouldn't mind it so much if they didn't present it in a way that comes off as...if this fails the only reason is sexism.
Also Ares could have potentially looked much more bad ass:

The reason they didnt make him look like this, is because he would look to much like Darkseid, which would be dumb.
