Sure, a properly done Extremis movie, with proper Mandarin or without, would've been a success.
1. That honor may go to Thor the dark world, when push comes to shove.
2. Yeah, they had all the right ingredients all they had to do was simplify the plot. Mandarain is your baddie. We were waiting for that since IM1, we damn well should have gotten that. With the extremis soldiers suicide bombers we had a potentially excellent Iron man vs Terrorism story brewing, something the character is right at home with, but they pussed out and made it all a joke. Hell they could have had Tony use extremis on himself like in the comic and have him use his new technology to track down the mandarin and shut his operation down. Connect extremis to his "House Party" initiative and have 40 plus suits attack the extremis soldiers while Tony takes on Mandarin. They kept going right when they should have gone left.
