With that kind of mindset It would make sense for you to make such a statement.
Hell even the writer said Malak was a better swordsman than Revan.
SInce he did play a part in making KOTOR that would have to be a viable source for some set of revenue.
Also he has more than enough acolades for someone to draw conclusions of there own, other than there black and white face value perceptions.
However, many would still have that knee jerk reaction to Drew due to his Revan novel, which was well earned. But it doesnt mean you should turn down all he has written before so, if not draw upon the small good things he did provoke.
IE Malaks skillset as a swordsman.
All in all Malak seems to be one of the most underestimated Sith as I have seen.

He's more skilled than Revan, but Revan has not demonstrated anything technically impressive with a lightsaber, so it doesn't really do him any good.

Based on what? What has he actually done, but lose to a fatigued Revan despite being empowered by the frigging Star Forge?
I take it you have only read things from face value, his training and skill with the light-saber.
Revan:
He also participated in a few lightsaber tourneys in his time before the Mando wars.
Yes despite being from word of mouth, seems to be more than simple rumors.
Revan as a swordsman, killing more than enough Dark Jedi, slaying Mandalore the Ultimate, Darth Bandons death (decapitation) it seems. Would speak well enough on Revans case.
However and unfortunately he is a very heavily debated character than noone can possibly draw on, but there own point of views.
As for what has he actually done besides have an official author "validate" I say it quotes because I dont think we have drawn upon our own to make a solid answer.
It seems some lack there own will to make there own, and we need the kindergarden teacher (Drew) to help us, despite our showings in our knowledge in SW lore.
In truth, I dont think it will ever happen.
As for Malak at hand despite all I have said about Revan, despite his many kills on his journey throughout his Jedi career, and Sith career Malak is still "the better swordsman" should speak some volumes.
His defeat of Bastilla Shan on the Leviathan. (Overwhelming her) was pretty impressive, as she was the one the best the Order had produced. As they did send her to lead a strike team against Darth Revan, which should also speak some volumes in her skill and power in some cases.

None of this really puts him on Dooku's level, though. Yoda thought Dooku was the best student the Order produced in the few centuries that were, according to Lucas, the prime of the Jedi. Statistically this is more meaningful than just being better than Bastila and killing some dark jedi.
Also the gap between pre-novel Vitiate and Malak seems to be substantially larger than the gap between Sidious and Dooku.
