TI requoted one of my posts that symbolizes this exactly (although sadly he does not seem to understand it). As I say, every ideology has extremists and opportunists that seek to exploit it. A perfect example is our political climate, in which we fear extremists and opportunists exploiting the ideologies of either capitalism/egoism (which liberals fear) or socialism/altruism(which conservatives fear).
As such, an ideology itself can not be blamed for these extremists and opportunists, as it is their subjective interpretation that led to their corruption of the ideology. We can tell an ideology has been corrupted when it has been used to instill suffering and adversity upon others, and thus anybody who victimizes other on behalf of the ideology can not be considered true followers of the ideology.
One example of this extremism includes fundamentalist interpretation of exact scripture which is a cause of intolerance in multiple religions. Just as fundamentalists such as Fred Phelps and Kim Davis can not be considered representative of all Christians, ISIS and Sharia theocracies can bit be considered representative of all Muslims.
EDIT: By extremism, I mean fanaticism, although in cases such as ISIS, this can become extremism.
