In the novelization Windu was barely surviving early on in the fight, which seems to be reflected in the movie.

^ I don't remember Mace barely surviving in the novel. As for the film he was on the defence, that's a legitimate combat strategy against a powerhouse like Palpatine. Doesn't mean he was desperate or barely surviving.

I know, but I think people go way overboard with the mechanics of how that works.

Mace also channels his inner darkness through Vapaad so is extremely dangerous regardless of who he's fighting.
