Using China, which is the second largest cinema market in the world, as an indicator for any movie's success, or lack thereof, is prudent and essential due to how large that market is and how much influence it has over other Asian cinema markets.

Fixed your post for you to be far more accurate.

IMO, just use the total, so thus far TLJ has grossed over 1.2billion; it's expected to creep over 1.3billion.

Google tells me it cost 200million to make. So even if we double that (for marketing and whatnot) to 400million and using basic maths, that's a profit of around 900million dollars.

Don't know about anyone else, but 900mil in profits spells financial success to me. This is also not factoring in merchandising, DVD and digital sales, which will probably bring in another 300-500mil.

edit: But also, should be noted that TFA made a bit over 2billion and if we compare TLJ to that specifically, sure, it was hugely less successful, but still a very successful film.

Right, which is why I said Quan was right about this. Despite how powerful the Chinese cinema market is becoming, it was too late: the movie made too much money. However, this definitely limits Star Wars in that market, in the future. Disney has lots of smart people (just hired one from Disney who was there for 14...she has lots of stories about how their marketing works) and they will figure out how to deliver in Asia.

I wasn't arguing for or against anything you said, just giving my view on how to best view success. Earnings minus overhead.

For sure they will, even though this movie rocked the box office, the reality is Disney left 700million (or more) on the table in potential earnings. They'll course correct that for ep9.

👆

Yup, it's Disney. Possibly the #2 best marketing company in the world (right behind Apple).

Lets get some Star Wars into a Kingdom Hearts game god dammit.

I'd say that's a fair assessment of the 1st and 2nd place. I'd put Nike or Toyota at 3rd

as i already said, china never had the original trilogy and had no context nor idea of anything the current story is built upon, besides the far removed PT, and ep 7 . anyone trying to dismiss that is a buttmad clown to be ignored.

Waiting for rebuttal from KMC's No.1 Class Clown.... 😉

using china as an indicator for TLJ's success, or lack of, is laughably ignorant.
👆

The Force Awakens made 124 million in China, this shit fest made 40 million, 38 million of that coming on opening weekend. LOL. 😆

So basically most Chinese theaters dropped this shit fest by the 2nd weekend of release.

The bottom line is China don't give a f*ck about Star Wars and their interest is waning big time as the last 3 Star Wars movies have been taking big declines at their box office. The good news is that Star Wars don't need China to be successful.

again, ep7 did not center around a return-character with an already-revealed backstory, who was never even seen in china. ep8 did, and unfortunately that means that you need to have seen the OT to understand wtf was going on. nobody there knows who luke skywalker is. that's a simple fact.

all this proves is that it's true that TLJ did not work as a standalone film, and by extension the new trilogy does not work as a standalone either. they're reliant on previous episodes for reference in order to follow, enjoy, and care about the story and characters. however imo the same could be said about ESB and many other great sequels.

Also Force Awakens attempted a Massive Marketing push in China, which still didn’t really work out the way Disney hoped. So they didn’t bother with TLJ.

Lol, someone edited out all the women in this film. This article is just dripping with self righteousness about it.

Some Dummy Edited All the Women Out of The Last Jedi, and the Cast Isn't Having It

The triggerdom is funny, but this line caught my eye:

"Because, of course, everyone wants to watch a version of The Last Jedi without Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa using the Force (only boys are allowed do that!) or Laura Dern's prissy Admiral Holdo saving the Resistance like some kind of silly girl. Right? "

Lol, how is Holdo not retarded? Her plan was awful, the plan the people who mutinied against it was far superior. You could have mad libbed a better plan than Holdo had.

Also, it's weird as f*ck that the first suicidal lightspeed attack occurred in the 9th movie...

Surtur is now triggered over Star Wars.
