Haven't watched vid, but iirc, Lucas pretty said he walked away from Star Wars due to the negative feedback from fans.

Well plenty of Star Wars crybabies caused quite a stir over how much they hated this film so blame your fellow Ot loving curs if they derail the train for the future and decide to play it safe.

I like the nostalgia, but Star Wars always blows the imagination of new generations by treading new waters. So certainly not a fan of just imitating the OT. Which is why I liked a lot of things about this one, but had serious issues with TFA.

Finally saw this last week and I can see what all the controversy and the gap between critical and audience reviews was all about now. While TFA was a mediocre film that relied on being essentially a remake and having a heavy nostalgia factor, TLJ was just a pretty bad film IMO. Not surprising to me at all that there was major drop off in box office compared to the other SW films and the poor response in the chinese market.
It did have a couple of good moments where I felt like they were about to rescue the film but unfortunately it just didn't pan out. Very disappointing overall.
