He assumes cause he says it, that makes it true. He bases his proof on his claim, he doesn't base his claim on any proof though.

With a muzzle velocity of 2850 ft per second, a 50cal round would travel 1 mile in about 2.5 seconds.

So a bullet traveling 2500fps going 20 feet would be basically instantaneous.

Thors hammer was not traveling instantaneously.

TBF, we have calculable showings to deduce that Superman can fly at ridiculous speeds. Like travelling halfway around the globe in a minute of two (forget how long it was, but was fast) and flying from Smallvile to Metropolis to save Lois in a stupid short amount of time. But that doesn't mean he's always flying at those speeds, we certainly see him flying much slower at times.

Another point I'd like to note about Mjolnir in that scene, when Thor first gets punched and sticks out his hand, how long does it take for Mjolnir to fly to him?
