1. Maul's attention was entirely fixated on Kanan's movements, and still got owned.
2. Sheev's attention, as opposed to Maul's, was entirely fixated on killing/torturing Luke. He wasn't even looking at Vader.
3. Sheev was clearly taken by surprise by the betrayal of Vader, and couldn't to much to prevent his fall, considering Vader literally picked him up while he was using lightning. 😬
4. Maul was the one who attacked Kanan, not the other way around, and they actually entered a brief exchange of strikes before Kanan pushed him off the cliff. Had Sheev been in the same situation with a blind Vader, you can take for granted that Vader would've died.

Maul went on to challenge Mandalorians, Dooku, Sidious, Inquisitors, Kenobi, Palpatine, Kanan, and Tano. He was too big of an impact player to leave alive per the creator. He died a true Sith legend.
