Form 1 is the foundation upon which the remaining forms build. It is not the best style for blaster deflection or lightsaber to lightsaber dueling, but it is a superior all around form you can fall back on in the heat of combat.

Thus you must demonstrate mastery of this form before you can continue.

Np, though it makes sense, mastering the basic foundation for anything would help the learning of branches be much easier since it all derives from the foundation and you could switch between them easier too.
