I wouldn't be offended if someone said, "I grew up atheistic and this forced me to think critically and empirically which lead me down my current path to academic success", I wouldn't be offended even a little bit and wish them success. So why would I be offended if someone said, "I grew up believing in Odin and the teachings helped me stay focused which lead me down my current path to academic success", I'd think that's interesting at worst.
Pretty much agree with this. It's the university's right if they want to do this. I think they should just let her read the speech as is, personally. I don't think anyone in their right mind would be upset assuming the quotes in the article are accurate. But whatever, it's on the university, they can have fun with the fallout.
