Once upon a time, homosexuality was seen as a threat to society.
Cracking down on "undesirables" like nazi sympathizer's may seem an obvious good thing to do, but that opens the gateway to go after lesser undesirables, and eventually go after people who aren't undesirables at all, but whom certain people in power say are undesirables, and so get treated as such.
Not really such a stretch in this country, with all the lawyers. Digging for every loophole and twisting every precedent in ways you'd never think of in a million years to suit an agenda is sort of their bread and butter (And many politicians have a background in law..)
