That, or do what I read they originally planned and have a new set of Guardians, just a movie early. Have them as an homage to the last ones, who (possibly) could have all been dead at the end of Infinity War Part 2.
Not necessarily Stallone's team, but there are tons of cosmic characters they could use.
I wouldn't blame Bautista for leaving the 3rd film if they don't use Gunn's script, but as long as they go along with his script, then we (as fans) need Bautista as Drax. It would be too fu#king distracting if he wasn't in the film.
I know Bautista has been very vocal about how upset he is over this, and I don't blame him, but it would suck if he doesn't return. It would put a huge dint in the trilogy.

The plan you're talking about involved Gunn. It was his idea, iirc.
Without him, they're in the dark.
