Militias weren't standing armies. See, the key dispute is over what a militia even means.
The US Right insists it wanted everyone armed so they could form a militia on short notice.

There are many things to consider.
1. The people keep and bear arms in case they need to rise up against tyranny
2. Police are a militia and are tyrannical
3. Black people are specifically targeted by the police and the biggest excuse is usually "he had a gun," which destroys the entire ****ing argument right there.
4. This was written by slave owners who had overseers who would shoot runaway slaves and freemen, as it's bad for business.
Like take a black person who has a farm growing a certain kind of medicine as a freeman (like how Washington grew tobacco) but an oppressive government keeps raiding his farms and shooting his friends/dogs. Might want to protect himself, no?

I actually am not against the concept of owning guns. I just don't think "the slave owners said I could" is enough justification.

The fact is whites get shot all the time too, for having guns.
It's also an unfortunate fact blacks commit more gang violence. Reasons for that can be argued, but it's simply a fact is happens.

When you put it that way, it's understood why white supremacists stock up on guns. It's understood why states' rights are always used to argue against gun laws and why it's no coincidence that the NRA formed after the KKK were disbanded.
