Strange vs maw wasn't a matter of prep/no prep. Maw was just quicker on the draw. There's a scene where strange tries to use his time stone, but maw binds his hands with metal chords. If strange can't use his hands, then he can't magic. That's why he lost to maw. It wasn't some elaborate plan, maw just beat him before he had a chance to whip out the big guns.

Yes, in the midst of battle he isn’t shit compared to Strange. Going into his work place upset like a ***** and led astray by Apoc. He’s mentally weak and nowhere near as effective or as powerful as Strange.
