Which is bizarre and sad. DC has had the same parent company for several decades - a movie studio - and could have done a shared universe on film long before Marvel beat them to the punch. They did it very successfully in Bruce Timm's DCAU, and had some success with the Arrowverse on TV. But once they f**ked up on the big screen putting Batman and Superman together, they've had to drastically retreat back and wait for the criticism to die down before trying again. All they know is, being (superficially) more dark than the MCU is not the way to be 'different' from them. Superman in Man Of steel went too far that way, and it got worse in Batman V. Superman(which was just one of several problems with the movie.)
Meanwhile, the MCU just gets bigger and more dominant. But waiting for Disney & Marvel to falter won't work either.
Yes, WB/DC had all the time in the world to do it right.
They thought they'd rush it and match/surpass MCU, even though Marvel's had 5 years on them.

It also won the Venice Festival top award. Good chance it gets nominated for BP at the Oscars.

Just remember, Suicide Squad won the academy award for best makeup and hairstyling
SS was never held at a gala, nor was it the front runner to win anything. Joker looks like the exact opposite. And we're not talking technical awards here. We're talking BP and Best actor.

while they ignore the fact that this isn't the real Joker and how he would be old enough to be Batman's father by the time they met.
It's probably an overstatement of the truth, too, since
Spoiler:
Arthur Fleck is young enough to believe that he's the illegitimate son of Thomas Wayne.

Its pretty much a retelling of King of Comedy/Taxi Driver.

Almost as funny as you going into damage control downplay mode whenever DC/WB makes a movie that allegedly isn't shitty. 👆
I was a fan of those movies this one emulates so im looking forward to watching Joker (Just have to wear my bullet proof vest to the theater). I dont care what studio makes a movie as long as its good.
Turns out that most DCEU and related movies have been shitty.

But it hasn't been told through the super hero medium.

Its funny that whomever plays Joker now a days treats it like some art house character study Oscar bait performance.
That's what an actor *should* do. No matter what the material is, you treat your character seriously and try to find the humanity in it. Even if you're a playing a character in a campy comedy, you still try to make them feel real in the context of that world.
