EU Luke reads like an actual hero; i.e. exactly what Luke is supposed to be.

Yup. Hes supposed to be the Ultimate Jedi. The Legacy of thousands of generations of Jedi passed on to him, to revive the Order better than it was. Much like what Darth Sidious was to the Sith.

Now Rey has become what Luke should have been. But unlike Luke, she didnt earn it.
