Strength obv wasn't working (you have the premier poster boy for strength on the scene). Speed wasn't going to cut it (the writers made sure to make it abundantly clear how fast DD was). Energy attacks were obviously tried, and all it did was make him more dangerous. TP maybe? I think Dubbilex tried that and he was just cast out (or maybe that was a diff storyline). Physical BFR obv didn't work, I don't know if DD even has a soul, so I guess one would have to Dimension BFR him. Magic also didn't work iirc, if Bloodwynd was meant to be magical (or was he meant to be J'onn?)
Incidentally, dimensional BFR is exactly what Batman came up with to defeat DD, to the Phantom Zone, so other avenues of attack obv weren't working.
He faced no premiere SF speedsters, guys who scare the crap out of Superboy Prime for their ability to deal w. him despite his own PC level strength and speed, but hey, ‘writers said’.
A couple of types of energy attacks didnt work, so none would have, or the combined might of dozens wouldnt have.

One guy who wouldnt make anyone’s top ten tried and failed (this .38 caliber pistol failed to stop the creature, lets ignore heavier caliber hand guns, and rifles, grenades, etc. and fight him in the stupidest ways possible from here out. No seriously, put that rocket rocket launcher AWAY, man. A .38 caliber bullet did NOTHING!) so lets just forget that.
And magic. Oh, magic. All the top tier magic users that DD -didnt- face that day could fill a couple of WHO’S WHO issues.
And, it didnt take Batman to come up w. BFR FTW, i’ve been saying it for well over 20 years.
Like, real attempts at BFR, not the silly ‘ungh, so weak, cant toss a one ton guy into space’ you stuff posted. Cuz you know, if Supes was -really- that weak, more than just one super strong guy on yhe planet.
