Memes: Lazy Humour or Legitimate forms of Comedy?

As the title says.

I've always found memes pretty lazy in terms of humor, you're using someone elses joke to sound funny, you didn't create that joke yourself.

Even worse, it's usually the only form of humour that braindead edgelords have besides telling people "kys" or calling everyone a retard every 2 minutes.

It's almost like the "Carlos Mencia" version of comedy. You're just STEALING someone else's joke to sound funny. No, its even worse then Mencia, because at least he tries to put a twist on it when it's someone else's joke. When you take a meme off the internet, all you are doing is taking someone else's joke and using it as your own, no twist, no changing it up, its just the same joke put out the same way from a different person.

Now if you're making your own memes, thats cool, but majority are taken from somewhere off the internet.

KMC, care to weigh in?

I love a good meme.

You are a Meme...not a good one tho...

It's great imo.

A meme is like an inside joke, but one where the inside is expanded to include a ****ton of people.

It's something like a shared experience in a way.

Never liked memes

One of the best places on reddit is r/prequelmemes. Really hilarious subreddit.

You get close to stating the actual definition of a meme.

Memes can make me laugh, absolutely, but it annoys me when people on social media try to make points with memes instead of using words, I wouldn't care if they quoted the meme verbatim (not always possible because a lot of memes are dependent on the accompanying picture). Had some facebook battles with friends who thought they could debate by using memes, I inundate their page with hundreds upon hundreds of totally unrelated memes. One guy literally begged me to stop, so I posted a meme about begging someone to stop. They do have their uses I suppose.

Well the nature of what it is is the reason why it's great.

For the same reason friends enjoy inside jokes with each other, memes can be enjoyed, but in a much larger community.

If those cartoons in the New Yorker are legit forms of comedy then memes sure as hell are too.

Just finished my second to last final of the semester

Memes can be legitimately funny, but I find these far and few between. Typically they're weak humor at best and idiots push them on and on.

Can't help but feel like that was a direct response to what I just posted 🙁

No, I actually found what you said coupled with that gif to be somewhat assuming.

NPC and their Humor Deficiency is running rampant.

Seeing them self trigger over memes is a form of comedy in itself.

Somebody should make a Meme of it.

i like a good meme, sadly most of the memes on here and boorish and crass
