Ok, fair point on the placement.

Still a pretty bad narrative. It's essentially asking us to overlook the fact someone with his intelligence and ambition should have found a better way to lose. No way a meticulous planner would go out like that, subconsciously or no.

And there's no way he ever should have won the guantlet if he had such a flaw.

It's Starlin wanting his cake and eating it, he's invincible until he isn't.
