The closest thing to an official explantion we have comes from one of Brevoort's social media pages.

And Brevoort was the editor of that issue.

but..... he didnt even answer the question. what a dick. 😕

it means brevoort is an idiot that has no clue of scale.

who is the kryptonite in this situation again, brevoort?

Maybe the beyonders are effective against cosmic beings, but not so much against mortals?

It was never clarified as far as I know.

Maybe they had access to "energies" and technology that worked well against the cosmic beings? But that's just speculation on my part.

You certainly can't scale them.

Wasn't there an explanation for why Starbrand could kill one? Something about not being bound to 616 's universal hierarchy or something? Maybe I'm misremembering.

Didn't Nightmare also kill a Beyonder recently?

You'd have to ask Galan007 on that. He was far more involved in that event. I just read the main books.

Edit. Speak of the devil....

He captured 2 iirc. Someone posted the scan a month back.

Several, in fact.

I never read the issue. Was he, like, mega-amped or something?

Not to my knowledge, no. I think it's implied their energies were weaker/drained in the Nightmare Realm?

Seems like their energies dissipated over the course of their imprisonment... But the fact Nightmare was able to imprison them in the first place is pretty ridiculous if he wasn't amped.

Also, those appear to be the same three Beyonders who obliterated the hierarchy:

...So if they've been imprisoned all this time, it raises some interesting continuity errors, along with some glaring issues with scaling.

wait, i thought those beyonders didnt start their siege on the multiverse until all of the higher tier beings had been wiped out? i also thought that the beyonders who destroyed the cosmics were the same beyonders who confronted the avengers (just with different art)? so how was nightmare just sitting there keeping them as pets?

also wouldnt this imply that nightmare > LT?

Like I said: continuity issues.

Because yes, the implication [in the original issues, at least] is that the Beyonders who wiped out the hierarchy were the same Beyonders who confronted the Multiversal Avengers.

In New Avengers #31, we see the two Beyonders depicted in their 'classic' forms, when confronting the Multiversal Avengers:

-Art by Kev Walker.

Then, in the first recap page from New Avengers #32, the same scene is shown again:

And they are shown in their 'classic' form again here(also from a recap page of NA #32):

*Bottom of the page.

But in New Avengers #32 itself, those same Beyonders are depicted in their Hotwheels/Transformers forms:

-Art by Mike Deodato.

IOW, it was seemingly two different artistic depictions of the same Beyonders.

So yeah, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, given that those Beyonders were "killed" by Starbrand and the Ex Nihiilii in the same issue... Yet Nightmare apparently "killed" the same Beyonders in his own realm. But here we are...

I suppose so... Doesn't make sense at all, though.

Could it be that their forms vary depending on who is looking? Like perhaps the audience "interprets" their form differently? Lots of speculation but it's all I got.

Battleboards posters are dicks.

Brevoort always felt tired of our versus forum mentality. And rightfully so.

You always pick cosmic entities as your faves, only to act surprised when you see them jobbing worse than Killer Croc vin

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional... you choose to suffer, Galan.

but how is it jobbing when nightmare is powerful by himself

in fact, probably could one shot all the mutants

Nah, they're not like those Authority losers who got murdered by Kev the Anti-Pr 😂

Because Nightmare has historically been in the same class of power as Dormammu and Mephisto, arguably even weaker.

Eternity defeated him with a wave of his hand.

Doctor Strange (1968) #182

yeah, and eternity also got imprisoned by him

Yes, that's what the scan says. Furthermore, it was only possible because Eternity had been weakened by Dormammu, and it was nothing more than a mild inconvenience to Eternity.

That said, I was technically wrong. Apparently the Hell-lords are class two demons, and Nightmare is a class three demon.

So Nightmare is an extradimensional entity or "class three demon" alongside the likes of Shuma-Gorath.

Whereas Mephisto and Satannish are class two demons.
