Ignoring the question of why made him debate team captain, he assumed there is only one style of debating.
For myself, personally, I prefer a "drinking at the bar with friends" approach. My goal is not to win, but to enjoy teasing out all sides of the topic. I'll usually keep to one side, but if I were to "smash it", I would be unhappy. Very unhappy.
The pleasure isn't in winning for me, it's in keeping the game alive as long as possible.
