First time playing Nex Machina, a Robotron style twin stick shooter, leaderboard ranked 101,153 out of 919,590.

Had no idea what I was doing, died all the time, can't imagine anyone doing worse. What, did over 800,000 stop at the first level and refund it or something?

Twin stick shooters are a pretty niche thing, you know what you're buying into, the same way Soulsbourne fans know they're in for a bad time on their first 100 hours.
