As Astner touched on it was established in the classic IG days that the gems alone operate at a reduced power level. It is only in unison as a circuit that they reach top tier power.

I think it was said that in a circuit the Power Gem acts as an energy reservoir amping up the others. I'll have to look for said scene.

But then again the gems did undergo a revision post Secret Wars so who knows what the situation is now.

Yeah, I guess I was just thinking about the Rune instance(which almost seems like more of an outlier at this point.) Could be misremembering, but I thought Rune used the gem to stop time across the entire universe, and the only being who was unaffected was LT(because he exists outside of time or somesuch), who then removed Surfer from said time-stoppage.

He uses it in the latest Batman. Shoots gas now and he says how it gives him more offensive options.
Bruce's hand was replaced in the issue after he lost it, by TDKR Batman:

Yeah, I was just wondering (up until the last issue) whether it was ever going to be alluded to being anything special or just a generic hand.

The way they've been writing Batman, him firing gas out of his fingertips isn't even that out there (remember his cowl's ear tips being fired out as darts?)
I actually like Batman modefying his entire suit (in a way it makes sense) instead of just storing every random shit in his belt.

He's used its functions a few times since, but Bruce is trying to conceal the injury for now(I think Mr. Terrific is the only one who knows?) So that might explain why it hasn't really been mentioned/used much.

why even have batman lose a hand in the first place if it just gets immediately repaired?

^ I suspect Bruce's reliance on technology to overcome his disability is setting up the philosophical dilemma of why a virtually immortal android with his consciousness shouldn't just take over for him.

Batman shouldn't be able to do it forever. He's just a man. A man with a mechanical hand now. Is Failsafe (corrupted as it is) such a bad concept?

Or I'm just overthinking things.

Or I'm just drunk. belch

Those cameos of Batmen from different worlds were brilliant, tbh.

Unlike the rest of the story.

Failsafe isn't a bad concept, imo. Even though DC obviously doesn't always age characters in real time, Batman is still 'mortal' and can't keep up his antics indefinitely... But the Zur-En-Arrh persona complicated things a bit.

The time gem was quite powerful back when Rune used it, but that was a long time ago. Apparently the gems have been watered down quite a bit since... Or the Rune showing was just an outlier. /shrug

It wouldn't really need to be watered down for Surfer to resist it. Surfer actually has a decent track record when it comes to dealing with the gems. He's broken free of the mind gem, he's the only person I can think of that's escaped the soul gem, and I could be remembering wrong but I think he shook off the reality gem in his most recent Tyrant encounter. Personally I justify such things with the tidbit about Galactus making Surfer special as a last line of defense against himself somehow factoring in... But that's about all I can come up with lol
